About us
The Karri Karrak Aboriginal Corporation is the regional corporation for the South West Boojarah region. This region refers to the Wardandi and Bibulmun/Piblemen Noongar and Kaneang Noongar language or dialectical groups. It encompasses towns including Busselton, Capel, Margaret River, Witchcliffe, Augusta, Windy Harbour, Northcliffe, Pemberton, Manjimup, Bridgetown and Nannup. The approximate size of the South West Boojarah region is 10,085 sq kms.
The South West Boojarah region is rich in Noongar Boodja, tradition, and culture. Karri Karrak rangers will be guided by Elders and Karri Karrak Lands staff to look after and care for Boodja to ensure it is alive enduring and healthy for generations to come.
Role Description:
Participate in a range of activities relating to conservation and land management and cultural heritage protection on the Noongar Land Estate as well as the conservation estate, and other tenures including Local Government reserves. Participate in work programs and projects with a range of stakeholders and interest groups including flora and fauna surveys and monitoring, cultural heritage protection, feral animal monitoring and control, and conservation programs associated with priority flora species, and threatened and endangered fauna species.
Undertake training in Certificate II, III, and IV in Conservation and Ecosystem Management at Southwest Regional TAFE.
You will:
Participate in development programs and applied learnings in the field focused on the acquisition of knowledge and skills linked to nationally recognised units of competency in Conservation and Ecosystem Management.
Participate in cultural activities relating to Aboriginal heritage.
Participate in monitoring of threatened fauna and flora populations and ecological communities.
Assist in activities associated with the protection of threatened fauna including through captive breeding programs, translocations and other associated activities.
Participate in monitoring and control of feral animal species.
Assist in research and monitoring of peatland ecosystems.
Undertake weed management activities.
Assist in cultural heritage surveys and the protection of cultural heritage sites.
Assist in erosion control particularly at key cultural sites.
Assist in the maintenance of mechanical equipment, including small motors, pumps, generators, 4WD vehicles.
Undertake other duties as directed.
Selection Criteria:
Essential:
Under Section 50(D), Aboriginality is an essential criterion. These positions are employment and training opportunities for Noongar people with a preference given to people who are connected to the Agreement Group Area where the position is located.
Interest or experience in working on Country and ability to participate in manual activities related to cultural heritage protection, conservation programs, and land management initiatives.
Ability and willingness to work towards nationally recognised units of competency in Conservation and Ecosystem management.
Evidence of ability to liaise and interact in a positive manner and demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively in a small and dynamic team.
Literacy and numeracy skills including willingness to read and understand maps, ability to apply relevant procedures in the work environment, including Occupational Health and Safety procedures.
Willingness and ability to work away from home if required. Be available for occasional weekend and irregular hours of work. Willingness to wear prescribed safety equipment and to work safely with chemicals.
Understanding and accepting different cultures in a workplace and treating all staff and members of the public in a fair and equal manner.
Current ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence.
Desirable:
Experience in operating equipment such as chainsaws, brush cutters and common maintenance tools.
Physically fit for “on the ground” operational works including rehabilitation works and erosion control, revegetation and fencing. Ability to traverse uneven landscapes and work in heavily vegetated settings.
Qualifications and experience associated with the operation of machinery and plant.
Previous background in natural resource management or a related field.
HR drivers license.
